Nature performs at its best when it’s given the chance to bloom. That’s why biodiversity is a priority for us. Not only does it sustain all life on earth, but it’s a huge part of our farms and the land that our hens get to roam on. By supporting the animals, insects and plants that live on the land, we can help them to flourish – all while fulfilling our mission of shaping a sustainable environment where nature can thrive.
We introduced our biodiversity action plan to nourish the local environment and give its all- important ecosystems a chance to prosper. Today, we have implemented this on some of our farms – and our vision is to roll it out across all of them. And as every farm is unique, there is an individual plan for each one.
Our aim is to regenerate habitat diversity across our farms which will benefit a whole range of wildlife, including birds, bats, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and invertebrates. Take a look at how we’re making it happen.
By installing hibernacula and log piles, local wildlife has a place to shelter. We’ve also been busy putting up bat, bird and owl boxes for nesting, including Barn Owl Duplexes and Maternity Bat Boxes, as well as building bee and butterfly banks.
By planting new native species-rich hedgerows, trees and shrubs, and by varying cutting height, we’re generating habitat corridors which support various forms of wildlife. We’re also introducing more diversity with new species of trees to provide even more resources for foraging.
By changing the way we grow wildflowers on our grasslands, we’re supporting greater floral diversity and fostering new areas of lowland meadows which serve as a home for wildlife.
We know that we can do more to protect the planet than simply putting goodness back into it. That’s why we’ve made a commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and have a direct impact at source, from production to packaging.
